Africa Gorilla Trekking safari is designed to offer you a chance once in lifetime to come close to the biggest and endangered primates. The way they forage for food, their social life and the lovely habitat they live in.
Day 1: Kigali
Arrival into Kigali International Airport. Meet & Greet Services, followed by transfer to your Kigali hotel, for check-in on Bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2: Volcanoes Mountain Park
Enjoy your breakfast in the morning, have an orientation tour of Kigali City, including a visit of Genocide Memorial Museum and Other Highlights. Proceed for lunch at the Hotel Mille Collines – featured in the film “Hotel Rwanda”, regarding the 1994 Rwanda Genocide Against the Tutsis. In the afternoon, drive to the Volcanoes Mountains for overnight. Approximately a distance of 94 kilometer or two and a half hours drives.

Overnight: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
Meal Plan: Full Board (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
Day 3: Volcanoes Mountain Park
Have your morning breakfast, then embark on your Rwanda Gorilla Trek adventure. Trekking can take from two to six or more hours if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them the next morning; The guides stop frequently to allow trekkers a chance to rest and take photos along the way; An eventually, our experienced trackers, who have spent their entire lives in or close to this forest, soon bring us up close with one of the Gorilla families; Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical one-hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young; Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth! The Ultimate Experience!!
A Walking Stick is provided at the start-point – to help steady your trekking; Porters are also available – to help carry your water bottle/hand luggage and/or even hold hand in slippery/steep sections. (this is at a minimal charge of US$10 per person, payable at the end)
In the afternoon, return to the lodge to relax as you relive the fresh memories of the close encounter with the gorillas; Or, optional activity, such as: Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorillas Guardians) – for some insights into the transformed lifestyle of these families of former gorilla poachers.

Day 4: Volcanoes Mountain Park – Kigali
In the morning have your breakfast at the lodge and later on enjoy either: 02nd Gorilla Trek – in which case you visit a different gorilla family; Or, Golden Monkeys Trek – trekking the only other member of the primate species residing in the volcanoes forest; Or, Dian Fossey Tomb Hike + Visit of her former research station. After the trek, drive back to the lodge for freshening up and lunch, followed by check-out ready for your drive back to Kigali. Before exiting Musanze Town, make a brief stop-over visit of the DIAN FOSSEY MUSEUM & FOUNDATION, in Musanze town (No Entrance fee, but donations are welcome). Then, bid farewell to the Volcanoes Mountains region, and drive back to Kigali – with onward transfer to the Kigali International Airport, for your evening outbound flight.
– Gorilla trekking is a strenuous activity and one should be physically fit to enjoy this tour.
– Minimum gorilla tracking age is 15 years.
– Minimum chimpanzee tracking age is 12 years
– Anyone with signs of communicable diseases will NOT be allowed to track.
– While possession of a gorilla permit is a guarantee of trekking and sighting the gorillas, the quality of the gorilla trekking cannot be guaranteed.
– Maximum time allowed with the gorillas will NOT exceed ONE hour.
Please Note
Volcanoes Mountains is a high altitude area of over 2,400 meters above sea level.
It is extremely chilly in the early mornings and evenings – warm clothing is therefore necessary.
While trekking, it can rain unexpectedly – it is necessary therefore to have:
- Water-proof clothing (jacket, with hood + trousers);
- Waterproof Zip-Lock bags for Cameras/Film/Passports/Money, e.t.c.;
- Hand Gloves (warm and water-proof), to keep hands warm and dry, as well as protect from stinging nettles;
- Hiking boots – with good mud-grip are most appropriate, especially in wet weather;
- Gaiters – to protect your trek trouser legs and boots against mud/wetness;
- Small hand/face towel, to wipe sweat off your face during the trek.
